GSP recording Artist Philip Hii has performed extensively in the United States, Mexico, Germany, and New Zealand. His Bach CD has received rave reviews from critics in Germany, England, Japan and the US. It was chosen as one of Guitar Player Magazine's picks of the month which says, "His passionate rubato and penetrating tone contribute to a thrilling performance." The Washington Post calls the CD "exciting" and "dazzling." and Acoustic Guitar Magazine calls him "the Heifetz of the classical guitar."

Since coming to the United States, Hii has enjoyed critical acclaim as a performer and scholar, publishing in music journals and performing to rave reviews. His recording of Bach’s music on the guitar was called “thrilling” by Guitar Player Magazine. His most recent recording , Chopin Nocturnes, has received critical acclaim as well.

A native of Malaysia, Hii began studying the guitar since the age of ten. For years he was intensely devoted to practice, and after winning a national competition in Malaysia, he left for New Zealand where he added the study of law to his non-musical pursuits.

He was awarded the New Zealand National Cup for his work on the guitar and appeared on national television as a recognized artist there. He furthered his training in Germany and England before coming to the United States in 1983. Not one to settle for expertise in just one musical idiom, he earned a Jazz Diploma from the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as a Masters in Music from the University of North Texas—one of the largest colleges of music in the world. He is the Director of guitar studies at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas.

"Nobody plays the guitar like Philip Hii; he's a Heifetz of the classical guitar. Hii's Allegro is the best I've ever heard and the Toccata and Fugue is downright scary. This is must listening for classical guitar buffs who want to blow a few fuses."
